I have a half dozen of them, ranging from the late '80's to a new one I ordered in '06. All of their "Cobalt" acoustic guitars are built in China (used to be Korean).

I love all 56 of my guitars, but these three brands, of which I own multipule copies of all, stand out to me as bargains of great guitar making.Īll of the electrics are built in the US at the San Diego plant. So in closing, I'm sure I'll be labeled a Carvin fanboy and I truly am, but I'm also a Robin fanboy and a U.S. Masters also, and their quality is just as good, but their options list is almost nonexistent in comparison and cost more to boot. Want stainless steel frets, 8 different bridge options, flamed maple fretboard, walnut neck with flamed Koa top, 3 different fret sizes, and countless other options.no other company has an options list like Carvin, let alone at their price point. What other company does that for their price.none.

When you buy a guitar at any local shop, you get what they have, there are no options except colors usually, while Carvins gives you 4 different fretboard radii!

I have no problem replacing some pots or switches and I'd never let them be the reason to turn my back on a quality guitar otherwise.Įveryone gets upset when they're called a "custom shop" and they're enough of one in my book to qualify. OK, so maybe their electronics aren't the best, so what, the above mentioned reasons are enough to buy for me. I own 9 Carvins at the moment and couldn't recommend another company more. The woodwork, fretwork, and finishing department are all top-notch on mine. Use that criteria to choose, because beutiful guitars can influence your choice only to find after you get uised to the looks you realize you aren't very happy with it. My advice is forget about the look and pretend it's a plain jane looking guitar and judge it soely on the tone and feel. This is why my main is a cheap MIM strat 60's wth some mods. And most anything short of utter garbage can be made to play good. I think quality is thier biggest and only real asset, but about the least important factor in tone. and like i've always said in carvin threads, i believe there a reason you never see anyone playing them. but to me fancy guitars just don't do it for me in the long run. They have a new 335 type model i saw the other day (work near the hollywood store) that was absolutly gorgeous, tho rather expensive. But there are a lot of newer models that are more traditional in design and woods if not totally. I personally don't care for them generally because i find thier tone to be too different and often missing certain things in the feel/dynamics. So if you want different they may be the way to go. In short, the quality is as good as it gets, but the designs and woods are not usual compared to the typical fender or gibson stereotype. Neck thru's are also rather different sounding and are a certain taste you may or may not like.

My experience with them is they were always painfully bright, but recently they have started using different woods and that should help there. But since you asked, the quality is top notch. You could have done a search and read enough "are carvins good" threads to keep you busy for a year.
